Welcome to The Bothy

The Bothy at Ivy Cottage is a unique and cosy Shepherd’s Hut, one of only a handful left in Northumberland. It is the perfect hideaway to explore this extraordinary County. Recently refurbished, the characterful and comfortable King-size bedroom has beautiful wooden beams, and an en-suite Shower & Toilet. The Bothy has no kitchen facilities and therefore self-catering is not wholly possible. The Bothy is advertised solely on a Bed & Breakfast basis, though we provide, kettle, toaster, coffee machine, and microwave, along with all the dishes and cutlery needed, if you wish to purchase take-away, or pre-cooked food from our local supermarkets, which many guests often do, and we are also surrounded by an abundance of excellent local restaurants, pubs/bistros etc.

You can relax and enjoy our pretty outdoor sitting area, with table and chairs, a bench seat at the front of the cottage to look out at the sweeping, beautiful countryside views. And if the weather is kind there is a BBQ available onsite to cook al fresco!

For those who love Dark Sky Nights, Northumberland is the place to enjoy the clear night skies at their best. If you have a serious interest in star gazing the Observatory at Kielder, where you can experience magical nights in the third largest protected Dark Sky reserve in the world, is located c. 45 miles from Ivy Cottage. The Observatory hosts events all year round and booking is essential (to view events and availability go to – www.kielderobservatory.org).

But if you just want to enjoy looking at the Plough, Orions Belt or the Milky Way then the Bothy is on the doorstep to the North Pennines AONB and UNESCO Global Geopark. There are 17 DSDS (Dark Sky discovery sites) – the nearest is just under 8 miles away at Knarsdale and a second at Allen Banks. So the Bothy at Ivy Cottage is located in the heart of some of the best Dark Sky Nights and you can enjoy it all in comfort with our on-site telescope and facilities, bringing you just that little bit closer to some of the best night skies in Europe.
